Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt was born 1858 in New York City. His family was very wealthy. His first wife Alice and his mom died in 1884 on the same day. He married his second wife Edith in 1886. He had six kids. Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th president of the US in 1901 after President William McKinley was assassinated. He was only 42 years old which made him the youngest president. One of the things he is most known for is in the field of conservation. He set aside 5 national parks and 150 national forest. He also thought there was a need for a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans so he made the decision to build the Panama Canal. He was the first American to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He served as president until 1909. The teddy bear is named after him because one time when he was hunting and they had not seen any bears, a guide found an injured bear and tied it to a tree for the President to shoo but he refused to shoot it.  A political cartoonist made a cartoon for the paper. A candy store owner saw it and started calling his toy bears Teddy's bears.  President Roosevelt died in 1919.
